Silent Night commemorative stamp 2005

The Silent Night Society continues the stamp series begun last year with the Franz Xaver Gruber Memorial House in Hochburg (Upper Austria) as its theme. “The personalized commemorative stamps of the Society with Silent Night themes will continue to appear in the coming years at Christmas. The series should be a particular attraction for stamp collectors”, the Society’s manager, Renate Schaffenberg, declared briefly.

After the Fuegen Singers in 2004, the Gruber Memorial House will grace this year’s commemorative stamp. It will be a reminder that Franz-Xaver Gruber, the composer of the world-famous Christmas carol, “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was born in 1787 in the Upper Austrian town of Hochburg. The museum dedicated to him is a wooden structure, over 200 years old, which corresponds in style, form and arrangement to Gruber’s house of birth. The furnishings and design of the memorial house show the living- and working environment of farmers earlier on. On the first floor of the living area, there are original Gruber memorabilia such as a loom on which the Silent Night composer learned the trade of weaving. Until the age of 18, Gruber was a weaver and only after receiving his father’s approval, was he allowed to begin the teaching profession.

If you would like to add a special touch to your Christmas mail, use the Silent Night commemorative stamp and the Silent Night postmark (Oberndorf bei Salzburg), addressed to the recipient. Price: 2.50 Euros per standard letter of up to 50 gm for mailings within Europe. In this way, you are supporting the work of the Silent Night Society.
